Principle and Function of PTC Electric Heater



PTC ceramic heaters are composed of PTC ceramic heating elements and corrugated aluminum strips bonded with high-temperature adhesive. This type of PTC heater has the advantages of low thermal resistance and high heat exchange efficiency, and is an automatic constant temperature, energy-saving electric heater. One of its prominent features lies in safety performance; under any application conditions, it will not produce the surface "red glow" phenomenon like electric heating tube heaters, which can cause burns, fires, and other safety hazards. PTC thermistor heating elements are high-tech products of modern times and even the future. They are widely used in light industry, housing, transportation, aerospace, agriculture, medical, environmental protection, mining, civil appliances, etc. Compared with nickel, chromium wire, or far-infrared heating elements, they have advantages.


 

Features of PTC Ceramic Heaters

1. PTC ceramic heaters save cost and have a long lifespan.
No need for a dedicated temperature controller and temperature sensors such as thermocouples or RTDs for temperature feedback to control the heater's heating; its temperature adjustment relies on its own material characteristics, giving the product a much longer service life than other heaters. 
2. PTC ceramic heaters are safe and environmentally friendly. 
The heater body is designed with multiple heating temperature levels below 200 degrees Celsius. Under any circumstances, the body does not glow red and has a protective isolation layer. No asbestos or other insulating materials are needed for cooling treatment in any application, so it can be used with confidence without concerns of burns or fire hazards. 
3. PTC ceramic heaters save electricity. 
Compared with electric heating tubes and resistance wire heating products, this product relies on the material's own characteristics to adjust its thermal power output according to changes in ambient temperature, so it can optimize the heater's electrical energy consumption to a minimum. At the same time, the high heat efficiency material also greatly improves the utilization efficiency of electrical energy.

Usage Notes for PTC Ceramic Heaters 

(1) PTC ceramic heaters have the characteristic of automatic constant temperature, no temperature control system is needed; simply power on the PTC ceramic heater. 
(2) When a PTC ceramic heater is used to heat liquid (such as water), the PTC ceramic heater will not be damaged after the liquid boils dry. 
(3) If a PTC ceramic heater is used to heat cold air, it will not be damaged when no air is blown. 
(4) Long service life: under normal environmental use, the lifespan can reach more than 10 years. 
(5) Reliable operation: using the internal characteristics of the PTC ceramic heater for temperature control, it will never overheat. 
(6) Very wide operating voltage: when the operating voltage changes by 2 times, the surface temperature change is very small. 
(7) When multiple PTC ceramic heaters are used together, they should be connected in parallel, not in series.



Application Range of PTC Ceramic Heaters

(1) General practical PTC heaters. These appliances mainly include: electric mosquito repellent devices, hand warmers, dryers, electric hot plates, electric irons, electric soldering irons, electric bonding machines, curling irons, etc. Their characteristics are low power but high thermal efficiency and practicality. 
(2) Automatic constant temperature PTC heaters. These appliances mainly include: small crystal device constant temperature baths, constant temperature incubators, electronic thermos bottles, insulation boxes, insulation cups, insulation trays, insulation cabinets, insulation tables, etc. Their characteristics are automatic insulation, simple structure, good constant temperature performance, high thermal efficiency, and wide ambient temperature range.
(3) Hot air PTC heaters. These appliances mainly include: air conditioners, fan heaters, small warm air heaters, hair dryers, room heaters, dryers, drying cabinets, clothes dryers, industrial drying equipment, etc. Their characteristics are high hot air output power, rapid heating, safety, and automatic adjustment of air temperature and power consumption.
